how does space clearing work?
Everything that happens in a building is recorded in the walls, floors, furniture and objects in the space. This builds up layers and affects the occupants in profound ways. For example, if you move into a home in which the previous occupants were happily married, it is likely that you, too, will find marital bliss there. On the other hand, if you or the previous occupants have been unhappy, got divorced, got sick, gone bankrupt, put on weight, or any of a million other things, those imprints remain in the building and will usually cause history to repeat itself.

The ceremony taught by Karen Kingston to practitioners is in three parts:
Preparation
The consultation begins with an opening chat to establish the main focus for the ceremony. The practitioner then does a circuit of hand sensing, reading the energies embedded in the walls, furniture and objects in the place. The information revealed by this process is usually a fascinating experience for the client. A space clearing altar is then created to anchor the energies during the ceremony.
Clearing
The practitioner makes a series of circuits around the inside perimeter of the space using advanced techniques to clear out stagnant energies, such as clapping and belling.
Revitalization
A special process using harmony balls and presencing techniques is performed to instill into the space new, higher frequencies that are specifically tailored to the occupants.
how to prepare for a space clearing consultation
Your practitioner will guide you through every step of the way. All you need to do is:
- Get as clear as possible about your main focus for the ceremony
- Arrange for infants and small children to be taken care of by someone at a separate location
- Clean and clutter clear as much as possible beforehand (but not to the point of exhaustion)
You will get the best value from a consultation if you book it for a day when you will not need to go out after the ceremony, and will not be going away on vacation or sleeping away from home during the following week.

Anyone who is fit and healthy can learn to do a basic level of space clearing in their own home, following the information in Karen's book. The training to become a professional space clearer, clearing other people's homes, is much more challenging. The first step for students who train with Karen is to spend several years developing their subtle body structures and energetic perception. The professional training currently consists of 290 hours of tuition spread over about 9 months, and even then there is no guarantee of certification at the end unless they are able to consistently achieve the high standard required.
If you search the internet for space clearers, you'll find many who claim to have been trained by Karen but have in fact only read her book or attended a weekend workshop. There are also some who did indeed take her training years ago but were not capable of completing it, or did complete it but did not maintain their skills. If their name does not appear in the Directory of Practitioners on this website then they will be offering a very different standard or type of space clearing to the practitioners she has personally trained to such a high level.
why clutter is a problem
While advice on general clutter clearing forms a part of both space clearing and feng shui consultations, for some people it is necessary to focus on this aspect as a priority. Karen has included a lengthy chapter about this important topic in her first book, Creating Sacred Space with Feng Shui, and her second book, Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui, is devoted entirely to the subject.
She explains: "The reason clutter is such a problem is because it impedes the flow of energy in our homes and workplaces. Anything neglected, forgotten, unwanted, unloved or unused, as well as clutter of the 'just too much for the amount of space' variety will cause energy to slow and stagnate, and then we complain that we (or our finances, relationships, etc) feel tired, lethargic, aimless or stuck. The clutter itself begins as a symptom of what is happening with us energetically and then becomes a part of the problem itself."

The practitioner will begin by going around the inside perimeter of your home, energy sensing every item in it with their hands. Using an advanced technique developed by Karen Kingston, the practitioner will explain in depth exactly how your clutter is affecting you and holding you back in your life and will give you practical advice about how to clear it.

Consultation fees
Consultation fees are determined by:

Most practitioners have a minimum call-out fee, and many are willing to travel to do consultations. They will be happy to give you a quotation that includes a reasonable amount for their travel time and expenses to do so, shared between however many consultations they do on that visit. This means that if you have a few friends who would also like consultations around the same time, it will work out less expensive for all of you.
